The Open Innovation AI Research Community (“Research Community”) is a program for academic researchers, designed to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the field of artificial intelligence. By joining this community, participants will have the chance to contribute to a research agenda that addresses the most pressing challenges in the field, and work together to develop innovative solutions that promote responsible and safe AI practices. We believe that by bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, we can accelerate the pace and progress in AI research.
We host workshops and activities to carry out and support key research discussions, initiatives, and development to boost innovation and capabilities that drive the safe development of large language models and generative AI technology more broadly. Collaborations between Meta and the research community provide opportunities to garner key feedback on Meta’s approach to open-source and to support research within the community to support Meta’s future model development.
This community is open to professors at accredited universities anywhere in the world.
Community members should have relevant experience with Al, backgrounds in diverse research disciplines, technical capabilities to pursue research, and the ability to contribute to virtual forums and in-person workshops. Each university may have multiple participants. We encourage applications from institutions that serve underrepresented students, and institutions that are located in the Global South.

First Annual Research Workshop: This multi-track workshop covered several different areas, introduced the first cohort of the Research Community to each other, and created a plan on how to best utilize this group to further research and collaborations on open source LLMs.
The Trust and Safety Workshop brought together representatives from Meta and the AI Alliance to host discussions on defining Trust & Safety and new research initiatives within this space.
The Research Community’s first working group met in person to finalize their collaboration on a whitepaper. This paper has been accepted at ICML (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2405.08597).
